Every great wedding photographer has his or her unique photography style. I personally love experimenting with several wedding photo ideas. But at the end of the day, I pride myself in the photojournalistic wedding photo style. If you’re unfamiliar with the style, it is the use of photography to tell a story. And a photojournalistic wedding photographer does just that. We observe and record from the sideline as the wedding day unfolds.
And I wanted to share with you how this photo is a perfect example of that. At a glance, you can feel the joy and the energy from this wedding. But there’s more to that story.
It was a perfect day for an outdoor wedding in Puyallup, Washington. Slightly overcast with just enough sun peeking through to warm up the wedding party. And hurray, no rain!
The bride was super friendly and easy-going. The groom was rather shy, perhaps from the pre-wedding nervousness. But his groomsmen did a fantastic job of lighting up the energy around the couple. They’re so reliable, aren’t they?
The groom and many of his friends and family members are from the Ivory Coast. Many of them actually flew over to attend the wedding. So they were really excited and intrigued by everything around them. They really wanted to document everything. Normally a photographer would kindly ask the couple to remind the guests to not use their cell phone or tablet during the reception. But at this wedding, everybody had something in their hands. Instead of asking them to not use any mobile devices, I decided to embrace it. It is the trend nowadays and you just can't avoid it at every ceremony.
Besides, this created an interesting photo narrative opportunity. I wanted to capture the enthusiasm and the excitement of all the guests. I always love seeing the celebration at the end of every wedding ceremony. And this is certainly the best representation of what it's supposed to look like in the most photojournalistic way.
